CoE’s firefighter retires after 37 years
When I think back in my life, I remember while in grade two, fire fighters came to our school and my interest was sparked.
Hendrik Adriaan van Heerden officially retired after 37 years of service as a firefighter in the City of Ekurhuleni.
He is described by the Ekurhuleni Emergency Services (EMS) spokesperson William Ntladi as a loyal, respectful member of the force who served with dignity, honour and laughter.
In a previous interview with GCN, Van Heerden was open and honest about his love of working with young firefighters and his passion for his job. He also shared some moments he will always treasure.

During his departure ceremony, conducted at the Germiston Fire Station, he said, “When I think back in my life, I remember while in Grade Two, firefighters came to our school and my interest was sparked.

“Being a firefighter is a calling, one that calls one to serve others. I am appreciative of the inspiring staff members and managers. The firefighters helped me maintain my modesty. Thank you to my family for helping me develop as a person.”
One incident that stands out in his memory was when they were once called to the site of a man who was about to commit suicide.
“He was poised to jump off the building. I kept talking to him until we saved him. One person always thanks me when he sees me after we had saved him,” said Van Heerden.
