Two suspects arrested in Bedfordview for copper cable theft

Bedfordview SAPS and law enforcement partners arrested two men caught with stolen copper cables worth R30 000. The suspects admitted to removing the cables from streetlights.

Two male suspects were apprehended by members of the Bedfordview SAPS, Gauteng traffic wardens, the Gauteng Traffic Infrastructure Unit (Eastern Corridor), and crime prevention wardens on July 28 while conducting patrols in the area.

The suspects were stopped on the Van Buuren off-ramp from the N3 after they were spotted pushing a trolley loaded with copper cables.

“Upon questioning, the individuals admitted to stealing the cables from the corner of Van Buuren and Van Der Linde streets.

“Further investigation confirmed that the cables had been removed from streetlights,” said Bedfordview SAPS spokesperson, Sergeant Lillian Modiga.

The stolen copper cables, measuring approximately 30m in length, are estimated to be worth R30 000.

Both suspects have been charged with tampering with essential infrastructure.

An additional charge relating to undocumented persons has also been filed.
