JMPD arrests 252 motorists in week-long drunk driving crackdown
The Johannesburg Metropolitan Police Department (JMPD) recorded 252 DUI arrests in one week as intensified roadblocks and stop-and-search operations targeted reckless driving.
The JMPD has intensified efforts to curb drunk driving, resulting in the arrest of 252 motorists during a week-long operation across the city.
According to the JMPD, the arrests were made between April 27 and May 3 during a series of strategic roadblocks and mobile stop-and-search operations conducted across all regions, including the inner city, Sandton, Soweto and Midrand.
The department said the operations form part of ongoing measures to improve road safety and reduce accidents caused by intoxicated driving.

JMPD chief of police Commissioner Patrick Jaca said the number of arrests, while indicative of proactive policing, remains a serious concern.
He said each arrest represented a potential tragedy prevented, adding that driving under the influence is not a lapse in judgement but a deliberate decision that endangers lives.
The JMPD reiterated its zero-tolerance approach to drunk driving, warning that offenders will face the full force of the law in line with the National Road Traffic Act.
Motorists have been urged to act responsibly by making alternative transport arrangements if they intend to consume alcohol, such as using e-hailing services or appointing a sober driver.
The department added that officers will continue maintaining a visible presence on the roads to ensure compliance and improve safety for all road users.
