Murder investigation launched after woman dies in Bedfordview rock attack

An eyewitness told police the rock was allegedly dropped from the Van Der Linde Road Bridge

Bedfordview SAPS confirmed a case of murder is under investigation after a woman died when a rock was allegedly thrown from the Van Der Linde Road Bridge onto her vehicle on Friday morning, August 14.

The confirmation was contained in a statement released by Bedfordview SAPS station commander Col TW Mathiane.

Police said the incident happened on the R24 split towards the N12 northbound, near the bridge.

“Officers who responded to the scene found a grey Honda with a female driver inside. The vehicle had damage to its windscreen and front bumper,” Mathiane stated.

“The woman had suffered serious head injuries and was declared dead at the scene by emergency medical services.”

Police also found a solid rock at the scene.

“According to an eyewitness, the rock had allegedly been dropped from the bridge onto the vehicle while it was travelling on the road,” Mathiane stated.

The impact caused the driver to lose control of the vehicle, which subsequently collided with the barriers.

Police are appealing to anyone who witnessed the incident or has information that could assist the investigation to contact Bedfordview SAPS.
