Private investigator Wendy Pascoe says the festive season is a time of joy and celebration, but it is vital to prioritise your and your loved ones’ safety.

She has these tips to help you stay safe and reduce the risk of kidnapping or going missing during this time:

• Stay vigilant: Be aware of your surroundings and trust your instincts. If something feels suspicious, remove yourself from the situation immediately.

• Plan your outings: Before heading out, tell someone you trust about your plans, including where you are going and when you aim to return. This way, someone knows your whereabouts.

• Do not share personal information: Be cautious about sharing personal details with strangers, especially on social media. Oversharing can make you a target for kidnappers.

• Travel in groups: Whenever possible, travel with a group of friends or family members because there is safety in numbers. Stick together and look out for one another.

• Use well-lit and crowded areas: Stick to well-lit, busy streets when walking alone, especially at night. Avoid shortcuts and deserted areas that may increase the risk of being targeted.

• Be cautious with transportation: When using public transport or ride-sharing services, verify the vehicle and driver’s credentials beforehand. Share your trip details with someone you trust.

• Avoid excessive alcohol consumption: Excessive drinking can impair your judgment and make you more vulnerable to dangerous situations. Drink responsibly and be mindful of your surroundings.

• Keep your belongings secure: Keep your belongings, such as purses, wallets, and cellphones, secure and in sight at all times. Avoid displaying expensive items that could attract unwanted attention.

• Stay connected: Keep your cellphone charged and have emergency contact numbers readily available. Regularly check in with friends or family to ensure they know you are safe.

• Trust your instincts: If you feel uncomfortable or threatened in any situation, remove yourself from it immediately. Your intuition is a powerful tool, so trust it and take action to protect yourself.

“Remember, these tips are general guidelines to help you stay safe during the festive season,” Pascoe says.

“Always prioritise your safety and be aware of your surroundings. Stay alert, stay connected, and enjoy the festivities responsibly.
