Watch: Jeppe Boys community and others remember Grade 11 learner in light of tragic loss

Bowie joined Wasps in 2020 and contributed to its success, particularly the 2023 Lions Seven’s tournament victory.

Messages of support and condolences have poured in for the Jeppe High School for Boys community and the family of the late Kaiden Bowie (16), who passed away tragically and suddenly on March 5.

Bowie, a Grade 11 learner from Jeppe High School for Boys and a boarder at Koodoo, passed away after a rugby match at the Die Anker in Brakpan.

In a Facebook post, Jeppe Boys stated that it is heartbroken by the loss of one of its learners.

A memorial service will be held soon.

Wasps Rugby Club South Africa was also saddened by the passing of beloved Bowie.

Bowie joined Wasps in 2020 and contributed to its success, particularly the 2023 Lions Seven’s tournament that the club won.

“Kaiden was not just a player but a cherished member of our rugby family. His passion, determination, and infectious spirit touched all who had the privilege of knowing him,” stated the club.

The Wasps extended their thoughts and prayers to Bowie’s family, friends, and teammates. “We will forever remember Bowie’s legacy both on and off the field.”

Gauteng MEC for Education Matome Chiloane also sent his condolences to the Bowie family.

Gauteng Department of Education’s spokesperson Steve Mabona confirmed that the Jeppe learner died after a rugby match.

“It is alleged that the learner was not feeling well after the match. “Paramedics tried to stabilise him and contacted an ambulance for medical assistance.

“The learner succumbed shortly after the ambulance arrived,” said Mabona.

He said the department’s Psycho-Social Support Unit was dispatched to the shool to provide necessary trauma counselling and support.

“The department is grateful to the South African Depression and Anxiety Group (SADAG) for also availing their services for additional support,” said Mabona.

“We are deeply disheartened by this. We extend our sincere condolences to the family,” said Chiloane.
