Suspect killed in shootout with police on R24 near Eastgate

Police have arrested one suspect, and another one died following a shootout with the law enforcers on April 15 on the R24 west next to Eastgate.

The incident occurred around 21:20 when police officers found the two suspects in possession of a hijacked motor vehicle and unlicensed firearms.

Bedfordview Police spokesperson Sergeant Lillian Modiga said police officials were pursuing a lead on the highway following the hijacking of a white quantum from Thembisa.

“The police followed the suspects until the R24 Edenvale offramp, where officers attempted to stop the suspects.

“The suspects continued driving until the quantum hit the barricade at R24 Wwest next to Eastgate.

“This led to the suspects shooting at SAPS members,” explained Modiga.

The police members retaliated, hitting the one suspect.

He was shot twice in the chest and a paramedic declared him dead on the scene.

“The deceased was taken to the mortuary.
