In the first case, the victim was defrauded more than one million from her investment savings.

The police have arrested four suspects linked to two different fraud cases amounting to R1.3m.

In the first case, the victim was defrauded more than R1m from her investment savings.

Until last year on her visit to the bank to open another investment account, she was shocked to learn that her money had vanished.

“During investigations, we discovered that her money was siphoned off into separate accounts in a different bank. When these transactions were taking place she didn’t receive any notifications or alerts from the bank.

“We suspect that her phone might have been intercepted,” explained Hlongwane.

The transactions took place between April and May last year.

Three suspects of the suspected syndicate have been arrested, with the youngest being 21.

Hlongwane said they were still in the process of tracing the mastermind.

Another victim fell prey to an online scam losing over R300 000.

The fraudulent transaction occurred when the victim attempted to purchase equipment for a business establishment.

“They bought a machine online for more than R300 000 but the product was never delivered. We have since managed to arrest the suspect,” she said.

She advised the public to verify the legitimacy of an online business before making payments.

She thanked her colleagues for assisting with both cases, which include Captain Dolo, Constable Ravele, Constable Shilowa and Constable Chabalala.
