Humphreys raises environmental concerns in Bruma

Ward 20 Clr Jill Humphreys expressed growing concerns over the dilapidation of the taxi hub in Bruma.
During a recent visit to the site, Humphreys pointed to a long list of challenges, from environmental hazards to a lack of municipal oversight.
Humphreys believes the illegal dumping and air pollution caused by recyclers is starting to affect neighbouring areas, including Morninghill.

“Taxis park here all day long when they go on a break.
“On the other hand, the recyclers here make a shocking mess, and it all goes into the Jukskei River,” she said.
The land’s history adds another layer of complexity to the situation.
According to Humphreys, the City of Joburg (CoJ) previously owned the land but sold it to a private owner in 2011.
“There was major skulduggery between the CoJ and them regarding the sale, and we’ve never really gotten to the bottom of it.
“This area was always intended to serve as a taxi hub, but it’s been left to deteriorate without proper maintenance. No one wants to do anything,” she said.

Another concern is the regular burning of cables caused by the recyclers.
“It is a major problem because burning recycling material contributes to toxic air pollution.
“Also, the smell of burning plastic is overwhelming. This is affecting the Morninghill residents because this is our boundary,” said Humphreys.
She believes the situation needs urgent attention.
