EMPD responds to increasing number of vagrants in Bedfordview
"This issue of homeless people mushrooming is a serious concern in most CBDs within the City of Ekurhuleni,” said EMPD and City of Ekurhuleni spokesperson, Zweli Dlamini.
Following a letter to the editor from a resident raising concerns about the rising number of vagrants in Bedfordview and the associated safety concerns, EMPD has responded, noting that the situation presents a complex challenge that goes beyond their sole responsibility.
“As the EMPD, we are aware of the situation of homeless people, and we do receive these complaints.
“This issue of homeless people mushrooming is a serious concern in most CBDs within the City of Ekurhuleni,” said EMPD and City of Ekurhuleni spokesperson, Zweli Dlamini.

Dlamini said they are responsible for the bylaws in removing homeless people from different intersections and placing them in shelters provided by Social Development.
“The Human Rights Commission also comes into play with the issue of homeless people.
The challenges are quite vast and it is not the prerogative of EMPD only.
We take into consideration the frustrations and concerns raised especially on drug-related issues and safety to motorists (smash and grab) and ordinary citizens.
“In this regard, we do have measures in place to deal with the crimes associated with the current situation,” he shared.
