Residents Action Group appeals for support with solar streetlights project
To date, RAG has installed 62 solar streetlights in the suburb.
With load-shedding making a return and many municipal streetlights out of order, community security non-profit organisation Residents Action Group (RAG) urges residents to contribute to its ongoing Solar Streetlights Project, to improve visibility and safety on Bedfordview’s streets.
To date, RAG has installed 62 solar streetlights in the suburb.
“Dark streets create opportunities for crime, making pedestrians, motorists and homes more vulnerable.

Criminals take advantage of unlit spaces. Substations have also become targets, putting electricity supply at further risk,” said RAG chairperson Anjela da Silva.
To address these problems, RAG is initially focusing on installing solar-powered streetlights in strategic high-risk areas such as around substations.
Ultimately, the NPO aims to light up the whole of Bedfordview with safe, sustainable solar streetlights.
“This is an environmentally-friendly, long-term solution to dark, unsafe streets.
Our solar streetlights remain operational during load-shedding and do not rely on an already strained power grid.
Reliable lighting is a key factor in crime prevention,” Da Silva stressed.

“This project is a proactive step to make our streets safer for everyone.”
Residents and businesses are encouraged to support the initiative by sponsoring a solar streetlight or joining forces with neighbours to co-sponsor one.
Contributions will go directly toward purchasing and installing the lights.
Residents can visit RAG’s website to contribute: https://bedfordviewrag.co.za/donate/ or email security@bedfordviewrag.co.za for enquiries.
RAG is an NPO that was founded 22 years ago by Bedfordview residents to fight crime and to keep the community and their properties safe and secure.
