St Benedict’s College sets record straight on alleged bullying incident

A story alleged the school’s executive head was hospitalised after an altercation with a parent.

St Benedict’s College has set the record straight following what it calls the circulation of misinformation alleging an incident on March 18.

A story began circulating, claiming an altercation with a parent saw the school’s executive head hospitalised and alleging he was assaulted for not addressing a bullying incident at the school. The school has confirmed that an investigation is underway.

According to protocol, the head of house began an immediate inquiry once the incident was reported, interviewing all the learners believed to be involved and recording formal statements to be kept on file.

It is alleged that after what appears to have been an altercation between two friends, the parents of a Grade 12 learner arrived at the school and aggressively confronted staff.

“They presented video footage of the incident and demanded an urgent meeting with the college head.

“Unfortunately, their engagement with the school rapidly escalated into verbal abuse and physical aggression towards staff, despite repeated efforts – including by the executive head and school chaplain – to de-escalate the situation and reassure them that due process was initiated and being followed,” said the school.

St Benedict’s College said it takes all forms of misconduct seriously.

College head Dave Jeffrey stressed that physical fighting violates the school’s code of conduct and has serious consequences.

“The investigation remains ongoing, and we will take the appropriate disciplinary action.

“St Benedict’s is unwavering in its commitment to fostering a safe and respectful environment for all students and staff in alignment with our Catholic values of dignity, mercy, peace and love.

“While we deeply regret the distress this incident has caused our boys, staff and parents, we believe meaningful resolutions are best achieved through constructive dialogue and cooperation,” said Jeffrey.
