Bedfordview water crisis: Residents face over a month of intermittent supply

Ward 20 Clr Jill Humphreys points to low pressure from Rand Water and municipal project delays as the core issues.

Central Bedfordview has been grappling with intermittent and inadequate water supply for over four weeks.

According to Ward 20 Clr Jill Humphreys, the crisis stems from low incoming water pressure from Rand Water, compounded by delays in municipal infrastructure projects and poor communication from the City of Ekurhuleni (CoE).

Humphreys reported that water pressure feeding Central Bedfordview ranged between 0.4 and 0.6 bar—below the 0.7 to 1 bar needed to supply the area adequately. As a result, some residents are left without water for up to 12 hours daily.

The Signal Hill reservoir has been undergoing a lining replacement project for over seven months, with progress delayed further by the non-payment of contractors.

In an open letter to Rand Water, Humphreys wrote:

“I understand you have the difficult responsibility of providing water through an ageing system that is stretched to its limits.

Nonetheless, I appeal to you to give urgent attention to this part of your network, which seems to be overlooked.

“For two weeks before your maintenance programme, incoming pressure for Central Bedfordview was 0.6 bar or less—insufficient to serve the full area.”

She also emphasised the daily struggles faced by residents.

“Families are forced to bathe children and run washing machines after 21:00. This is now the fourth week paying consumers have endured this service deprivation.

‘There seems to be no intention to resolve the issue. Why are we not informed of the cause or any progress?”

At the time of publication, neither Rand Water nor the City of Ekurhuleni had responded to media enquiries.
