Festive celebration unites residents and staff at Thembalami and MODA
Festive spirit filled Thembalami and the Max Ordman Deaf Association (MODA) during their Christmas party on December 12, as residents, staff and volunteers came together to celebrate the season.
The event was marked by laughter, music and meaningful moments. Social worker Lara Hurwitz said each resident received a personalised placemat featuring their name and photograph, taken by a professional photographer. Individual portraits were also captured.
“Residents were thrilled to see themselves on the placemats and are looking forward to hanging their welcome signs on their doors,” Hurwitz said.

Thembalami manager Esme van der Walt opened the celebrations with a message of gratitude and togetherness, acknowledging the residents’ life experiences and the value they bring to the home. She also paid tribute to MODA residents, highlighting their energy and important role within the community.
Van der Walt thanked staff for their ongoing dedication, volunteers for their generosity and all those who contribute to creating a space of dignity and warmth.
Entertainment was provided by musician Ruan Tennant, a familiar presence at Thembalami events, whose performance added to the festive atmosphere.

Residents enjoyed a Christmas lunch, followed by the distribution of 110 gift bags donated by Hotel Amenities Suppliers, a division of Bidvest Services. Each bag contained essential toiletries.
A poignant moment formed part of the celebration, with a ribbon bearing the names of residents who passed away during the year placed on a Christmas tree, honouring their memory alongside the festivities.
Van der Walt concluded by reminding attendees that Thembalami is more than a facility, describing it as a shared home where every person matters and life is celebrated with dignity, respect and care.
