City inspection will determine interim maintenance measures on Sovereign Road

The pothole-infested Sovereign Road will be included in the CoEni’s future planning cycle, subject to budget availability.

The CoE said Sovereign Road will be considered in future planning cycles, subject to prioritisation outcomes and budget availability.

City spokesperson Zweli Dlamini shared this in response to an article by the Bedfordview Edenvale News on February 11 titled Potholes turn Sovereign Street into danger zone.

In the response shared on February 13, Dlamini further stated that the city implements interim maintenance interventions where safety or structural failure risks are identified.

These include pothole repairs and localised patching. This is all pending full rehabilitation, which is also advised by the budget availability and prioritisation outcomes.

Dlamini said all defects logged via the CoE portal are recorded, assessed and prioritised by technical teams.

“Multiple or repeat reports are consolidated and contribute to prioritisation, particularly when defects indicate accelerating deterioration or increased safety risk.

“These complaints are monitored and consolidated weekly,” he explained, acknowledging that routine visual inspections form part of the city’s network-level maintenance management activities.

He added, “Sovereign Street and the surrounds were identified as showing surface distress and deterioration consistent with ageing pavements and cumulative traffic loading, namely wear and tear as it has aged.”

Dlamini said a technical site inspection will confirm the current condition and determine appropriate interim maintenance on Sovereign Road.

He added that temporary repairs will be implemented where feasible.

However, timelines for permanent rehabilitation cannot be confirmed at this stage and are subject to future capital budget approvals, according to the spokesperson.
