Overloaded vehicles in focus as Gauteng ramps up Easter road safety
Authorities in Gauteng are intensifying roadblocks and targeting overloaded vehicles as part of Easter road safety operations.
The Gauteng Traffic Police have issued a strong warning to motorists to avoid overloading vehicles as traffic volumes increase ahead of the Easter festive period.
According to the Gauteng Department of Community Safety spokesperson, Sello Maremane, overloaded vehicles, including trailers and public transport carrying too many passengers, are a major human factor in road crashes during this time.
“Overloading reduces vehicle stability, increases braking distance, raises the risk of tyre bursts, and significantly heightens the likelihood of serious or fatal accidents,” Maremane said.
He added that motorists are urged to ensure all loads are properly secured and within legal limits.
Vehicles must not exceed prescribed height, width, or projection limits, and passengers should only travel within the approved capacity.
“Children must be seated according to age and safety regulations,” Maremane added.
He further warned that the Gauteng Traffic Police, together with other law enforcement agencies, are intensifying operations across the province, focusing on overloaded vehicles on major routes and freeways.
“Non-compliant motorists and operators face fines and vehicles may be impounded if necessary,” he concluded.
