Deadline looms for SASSA gold card replacement rollout
New cards can be collected free of charge at Postbank service points located inside selected retailers, including Shoprite.
The South African Government News Agency reports that Postbank will begin the final phase of replacing South African Social Security Agency (SASSA) gold cards with new Postbank black cards from April 29.
Beneficiaries still using gold cards are urged to switch before the August 31 deadline, after which the old cards will stop working and could result in interrupted grant payments.

The replacement forms part of a broader migration process launched in September 2024. Postbank chief commercial officer Thamsanqa Cele has called on recipients who have not yet changed cards to act urgently, warning that the deadline will not be extended.
Postbank said beneficiaries who already have black cards do not need to take further action. The new cards offer benefits including three free withdrawals per month, one free card replacement and a free monthly statement, while also providing protection against unauthorised deductions.
New cards can be collected free of charge at Postbank service points located inside selected retailers, including Shoprite, Checkers, Usave, Pick n Pay, Boxer and SPAR. Beneficiaries must present a valid South African ID or temporary ID, and no forms are required.

Balances on existing gold cards will automatically transfer to the new black cards, which can be used immediately after collection. Replacement sites can be located by dialling 120355# on any mobile phone.
Postbank has also warned beneficiaries to remain vigilant against scams, noting that only cards branded “Postbank” are legitimate.
