Permanent fix planned for Bedfordview water leak

A ‘mysterious’ water discharge which has been running down Dean Road, Bedfordview, for over five years is in the City’s long-term solution plans.

The City of Ekurhuleni has planned a long-lasting solution for the water that has been running down Dean Road in Bedfordview for over five years.

Ward 20 Clr Jill Humphreys said there are several stormwater drains along the perimeter of Rory Byrne Close and Van Buuren Road.

“Any upstream broken pipe could be discharging into that, but how it then gets from the storm drain into the pipe exiting on Dean Road is a mystery,” Humphreys said.

She added that it has also been repeatedly observed and reported that whenever there is a general water outage affecting the Bedfordview supply, the discharge also stops. The councillor noted that this is significant and serves as evidence that the water is potable.

Following a recent logging of the issue, city spokesperson Zweli Dlamini said the matter was escalated on May 25, and a team was dispatched the following day to investigate.

“We suspect that the water might be coming from a blocked stormwater drain. We will take samples to see if there are any traces of chlorine.

“And if no chlorine is found, it will be evident that the leak emanates from a blocked stormwater,” Dlamini explained.

He confirmed that plans are in place to address the issue, saying: “Upon receipt of the water quality results, should it be confirmed that the problem is caused by a burst pipe, repairs will be undertaken immediately.”

Dlamini added, “The city has planned a long-lasting solution, whereby the professional service provider is already appointed to finalise designs so that the contractors can replace old pipes.”
