Faulty Edenvale Road bridge traffic lights blamed on cable theft

Following concerns about traffic delays and chaos caused by faulty traffic lights on the Edenvale Road bridge over the R24, the City of Ekurhuleni clarified who is responsible for their maintenance.
Ward 92 Clr Kade Guerreiro claimed that the traffic signals at the intersections along the R24 Edenvale Road bridge have been out of order for about four or five months.
According to residents, during rush hour they can easily sit in traffic for an extra 40 to 80 minutes because of the faulty traffic lights.

Following a media inquiry to the municipality, city spokesperson Zweli Dlamini stated that the traffic signals at the intersections of the R24 and Edenvale Road belong to the Department of Roads and Transport. He said the department has been made aware of the non-operational traffic signals.
Dlamini said the theft of electricity cables in the area caused the traffic lights to stop working.
“Although GPG is in charge, we have been informed that the traffic signals will be repaired by September 30.”
In addition to the faulty traffic lights on the bridge, the city was asked about non-functioning streetlights between Horwood Street and North Reef Road.
“The city is not aware of all non-functioning streetlights in this area,” said Dlamini. He said the city has established a reporting process whereby residents receive a reference number when a fault is logged.
“Should a fault be closed without resolution, an SMS notification is sent to the complainant and the matter can be escalated through the relevant ward councillor or the Office of the Divisional Head Energy.

When asked what the city is doing to address the faulty streetlights, Dlamini said these are fixed as and when they are brought to the attention of the city.
“The city encourages residents to report all non-functioning streetlights through its official reporting channels to ensure that faults are recorded, tracked and allocated for investigation and repair.”
Dlamini said the city continues to experience ongoing vandalism and theft of infrastructure across its network, including streetlight infrastructure.
“Damage resulting from vandalism, theft of cables and equipment and other infrastructure-related incidents contributes significantly to streetlight outages in various areas across the city.”
