More than 70% of dementia cases go undiagnosed, yet early diagnosis can help people access treatment and support sooner, manage symptoms and plan for the future.

Dementia expert Debbie Beech will present a talk about the warning signs of dementia as part of World Alzheimer’s Month in September.

Beech, a trained social worker, previously served as the regional manager for Alzheimer’s Gauteng.

She has worked in the field of dementia since 2017 and is currently the manager of Rand Aid Association’s Elphin Lodge retirement village.

Earlier this year, Thornhill Manor Retirement Village social worker Karen Griessel presented a talk in the lead-up to World Alzheimer’s Day on September 21.

Karen explained that Alzheimer’s disease is far more than the occasional forgetfulness associated with ageing.

It is a progressive brain disorder that gradually damages brain cells, affecting memory, thinking, communication and the ability to perform everyday tasks.

The upcoming talk, ‘Dementia warning signs: Before memory loss’, takes place at 14:00 on September 23 at Elphin Lodge, 222 Modderfontein Road, Edenvale.

Tea and coffee will be served after the talk.
