How can we prevent fires?

The EXPRESS asked resident what they think should be done to prevent fires at informal settlements.

After the fire at Jumpas Informal Settlement on September 17 when 87 shacks were destroyed, the EXPRESS asked residents what should be done to prevent fires at informal settlements.

Jabu Matlala said, “I want a house. Our shacks were built with wood and it is easy for all of them to burn down.”
Sphamandla Nkosi said, “Government must build better houses for these residents.”
Joseph Mthabini said, “I want government to provide residents with RDP houses.”
Mildred Ndlovu said, “We plead for better houses. If one shack burns it destroys all other shacks.”
Banda Tanda said, “I lost everything because of the fire. We plead for better houses.”
