EMM removing residents’ electricity cables without warning

To get reconnected, they are charging the residents a fee of R5 000.

EDITOR – The Ekurhuleni Council has been physically cutting resident’s electricity cables, and removing sections of these cables, even though the resident’s electricity accounts are paid up to date.

This is being done without any warning. The affected residents have not been given “soft cut offs”, where re-connection can be done quickly and efficiently, nor have the residents been given notices of their intentions.

To get reconnected, they are charging the residents a fee of R5 000, as well as demanding that resident’s commit themselves to a considerable down-payment, as well as a monthly contribution on any arrears in rates. The above happened this morning in Dawnview. The contractors doing the cable cutting and removing told the security guards that they were there to fix some cable problems.
