The Edenvale Lions Basketball Academy (ELBA) has introduced changes to their U14 squad.

The team has appointed former vice-captain, 13-year-old Reabetswe Motsogi as a captain and Noah Banjac to the vice-captaincy post.

Motsogi has been part of the team for two years.

He joined the academy after becoming friends with a group of players at his complex.

“I started enjoying the sport and wanted to take it to the next level. That’s when I joined ELBA. These past two years have been fun.

“I have learned about teamwork and discipline, and I have made some amazing friends,” he shared.

The team recently won gold medals at the Ekurhuleni South Schools Basketball 3 on 3 Tournament played at East Rand Mall.

He said they went into the tournament feeling confident. “We knew that we would win. We have been training together a lot and this wasn’t the first time we had played against those teams.

“Winning the tournament was a team effort, everyone played a part and we were extremely excited to have won it because we made it to the finals last year,” he shared.

He admitted he struggled with confidence, particularly in his shooting ability. “I had to work hard to overcome that obstacle. Thankfully, my friends at the club helped me through it.”

Banjac admitted that the tournament was challenging but winning felt good.

“We knew there would be teams that would be hard to beat, but we gave it our best,” he said.

He said what he enjoys most about the sport is that it is quick and good for fitness.
