Edenvale Football Club women’s teams aim higher after successful 2025 season

“We are hoping for a continuation of last year’s success.”

Edenvale Football Club’s women’s side is building from strength to strength.

According to coach Louis Antonopoulos, the Gauteng Women’s Development League and the regional side had extremely successful seasons last year.

He said the U15’s placed sixth while the U17’s finished seventh

“The 2025 season was the year that the Edenvale ladies put their names on the map and started getting taken seriously,” said Louis.

“The teams have shown development and growth, and we are no longer a club that other teams look forward to playing.”

Louis attributed the season’s success to the dedication and passion of the coaches and players, to the work done behind the scenes, and to the upkeep of the facilities.

He said another contributing factor is the support of the Edenvale Football Club, as well as the support of the parents.

“The parents come down and support the teams, the parents help create the sense of community, which this club is all about.”

He said that with the start of the 2026 season, EFC’s women’s side hopes to grow even further and do even better.

“Last year we finished sixth and seventh, this year we would like to finish in a top four position in the GWDL,” said Louis.

Last year was the women’s side’s first SAFA regional season, manager and founder Beverley Antonopoulos said. It was the first time entering the senior regionals.

“It’s an open age group for players between 17 and 40 years old, and we finished sixth, but we ended with a good, committed team, said Beverley.

This year, Louis said the EFC women’s side will introduce a U13 team into the GWDL.

Beverley said the U13 GWDL side will be focused on pure development and getting the players onto the field, having fun.

Players aged 10 to 13 are welcome to join the side.

“We want them to grow and develop in the U13 squad before they move to the U15 squad and upwards,” said Louis.

Looking to the remainder of the year, Louis, the women’s side will continue developing women’s football, focusing on growth and skill improvement.

He said not only will players be developed and improved, but coaches will be, too.

“We are hoping for a continuation of last year’s success.”

EFC’s women’s side will host trials on the weekends of February 7 and 8.

On February 7, trials will be held for the GWDL U13 and U15 squads.

On February 8, trials will be held for the GWDL U17 squad and the SAFA regional squad.
Registration starts at 09:00, and trials will end at 11:00.
