Mandeville Dolphins excel
Marizel van Jaarsveld was the top medallist for the club, winning silver in the girls’ U/14 50 metre breaststroke, the girls’ U/14 100 metre freestyle and the girls’ U/14 50 metre butterfly.
Mandeville Dolphins swimmers scooped nine medals at the SA Level 3 National Age Group Swimming Championships in Cape Town recently.
The club took 17th place out of 79 clubs from the Southern African region after obtaining one gold medal, three silver and five bronze medals.
Marizel van Jaarsveld was the top medallist for the club, winning silver in the girls’ U/14 50 metre breaststroke, the girls’ U/14 100 metre freestyle and the girls’ U/14 50 metre butterfly.
She also won a bronze medal in the girls’ U/14 100 metre breaststroke and the girls’ U/14 200 metre individual medley.
Carly du Toit won gold in the girls’ U/14 50 metre backstroke. Matthew Alexander won bronze in the men’s U/16 50 metre breaststroke and Christopher Ryan won bronze for the 50 metre breaststroke in the men’s 17 to 18 year old category.
Lize-Mari de Beer won a bronze medal in the girls’ U/13 200 metre backstroke.
The Mandeville Dolphins also performed well at the SA Level 2 Regional Championships that took place in Ellis Park from March 20 to 23.
They won 49 medals; 10 gold, 22 silver and 17 bronze.
The club was placed second overall out of 64 clubs from the southern African region, which includes Zimbabwe, Kenya, Nigeria, Botswana and Mozambique.
The results were as follows:
r Bradley Bloem (14) won a gold medal in the 200 metre freestyle and a silver medal in the 100 metre freestyle event.
r Flavio Ferreri won a gold medal in the men’s 16 to 18 200 metre freestyle and silver in the 400 metre freestyle.
r Alessio Ferreri won silver in the 200 metre backstroke.
r Marcel Laurent won bronze in the boys’ U/14 200 metre individual medley.
r Leeam van der Walt won gold in the 100 metre backstroke.
r Thoriso Williams won a silver medal in the 100 metre backstroke.
r Megan Botha (15) won gold in the 50 metre backstroke and 100 metre backstroke.
r Marize Bruwer (15) won silver in the 100 metre backstroke and 200 metre backstroke.
r Storm Hansen (13) won silver in the 50 metre backstroke.
r Stephania Spyropoulos (15) won bronze in the 50 metre freestyle.
r The disabled swimmers, coached by Paralympian Tadhg Slattery, garnered 34 medals. Thulane Mabuza won silver in the 400 metre freestyle, 100 metre backstroke, 200 metre individual medley and 50 metre butterfly. He won bronze for the 100 metre freestyle, 50 metre backstroke, 50 metre breaststroke and 100 metre breaststroke.
r Tinyiko Shabangu won bronze in the 400 metre freestyle.
r Kabelo Zwane (14) won gold in the 200 metre individual medley and silver in the 50 metre backstroke, 50 metre breaststroke, 50 metre freestyle, 50 metre butterfly and 100 metre freestyle.
r Nkosimayibongwe Dludlu won silver in the 50 metre breaststroke and bronze in the 100 metre backstroke.
r Mduduzi Sibanda won gold in the 50 metre breaststroke and bronze in the 50 metre butterfly.
r Dimakatso Makgakga won gold in the women’s 15 to 18 100 meter breaststroke, 100 metre backstroke and 50 metre freestyle and silver in the 200 metre individual medley, 50 metre backstroke, 100 metre freestyle, 50 metre breaststroke and 50 metre butterfly.
r Bongekile Sabeka won bronze for the women’s 15 to 18 50 metre backstroke, 50 metre breaststroke, 50 metre butterfly, 50 metre freestyle and 100 metre freestyle, 100 metre backstroke and 100 metre breaststroke.
r The relay team, which included Thoriso Williams, Kairav Ramsingh, Scott Hamilton, and Flavio Ferreri, won bronze in the men’s 14 to 18 4×100 metre free relay in a time of 3:54.59.
