Local takes on provincial champs

Bedfordview resident Nicholas Weeks took part in the Gauteng Marathon Championships, which took place at the Homestead Dam on May 10 and 11.

The young canoe polo player has been dabbling in sprint, marathon canoeing and river races.

The Homestead Dam, which is also home to the Ekurhuleni Kayak Canoe Club, hosted the trials for selection to the Gauteng team for the SA Marathon Championships, a national, inter-provincial event which will take place at the same venue on June 7 and 8.

Weeks doubled up with top Benoni achiever, Michael Stewart. Both are members of the Ekurhuleni Kayak Club.

The two took second place overall in the doubles championships race, finishing in under two hours.

Over the two days of the championships, the K1 paddlers pitted their strength, fitness and endurance against each other in single canoes, which included the guppy paddlers who are aged between six and 12. Sunday was the doubles championships for the K2 paddlers.
