Baseball team qualifies for U/18 World Cup

The South African U/17 baseball team has qualified for the 2015 World Cup.

South Africa was invited to participate in the U/17 baseball tournament held in the town of Meru, in Kenya, on December 13 last year.

This was to be the qualifier for the U/18 World Cup hosted by the IBAF, which will be taking place in Japan at the end of August.

Only one African country would qualify to compete in this tournament.

The South African team was scheduled to play against Tanzania, Kenya and Uganda in a round robin format, and then a playoff match to see who would compete for gold.

The results were as follows:

Uganda 5 – South Africa 8,

Kenya 0 – South Africa 30,

Tanzania 1 – South Africa 34

Playoff: South Africa 24 – Kenya 1

Final:

South Africa 4 – Uganda 1

South Africa was crowned the African champions and therefore qualified to play in the U/18 World Cup for 2015.

The team’s challenge will be to raise the money for the airfare and kit.

The accommodation and meals will be taken care of by the IBAF.
