Competitors of all ages take part in weightlifting competition
“We are hoping to grow Olympic weightlifting in South Africa.”
Competitors from across Gauteng participated in a development weightlifting competition held in Edenvale on January 27.

Held at the Sebenza based Crossfit 1610, the Barbell 1610 Development Weightlifting Competition saw competitors of all ages compete.
The youngest competitor was 11, while the oldest was 48 years old.

The competition was held in preparation of the Gauteng Weightlifting Championships.
“We are hoping to grow Olympic weightlifting in South Africa,” said Tyla Burrow of Crossfit 1610.
“Internationally athletes use weightlifting to train for other sports.”

Burrow said weightlifting gives athletes explosive strength.
Winners of the various categories in the competition were:
• Sibusiso Shuze, juniors category.
• Cainan Nathan, youth category.
• Odette Calitz, ladies senior category.
• Shelley Vernon, ladies masters category.
• Matthew le Roux, men’s senior category.
• André Gadney, men’s masters category.
