Real Betis Academy brings international football training camp to Johannesburg

The Greek Sporting Club in Bedfordview to host the first Real Betis Academy football training Camp in South Africa for footballers from U10 to U19.

Young footballers in Johannesburg and across South Africa will have the opportunity to experience the training philosophy and development approach of Spanish football club Real Betis when the Real Betis Academy hosts its first football training camp in the country in December.

The camp will take place at the grounds of the Greek Sporting Club in Bedfordview from December 11 to 13, bringing together aspiring players in the U10 to U19 age groups.

The initiative aims to introduce young South African players to the academy’s training methodology while creating opportunities for them to develop their technical abilities, tactical understanding and confidence on the pitch.

Real Betis Academy head Javier Lopez said South Africa’s strong sporting culture and potential for developing young football talent were among the reasons for bringing the camp to Johannesburg.

“Bringing Real Betis Academy to Johannesburg allows us to share our training methodology with young players, introduce them to our philosophy and values, and build stronger connections with the local football community,” said Lopez.

He explained that the camp also forms part of the academy’s broader international expansion strategy, which seeks to create meaningful opportunities for young footballers to learn, grow and experience different approaches to the game.

Real Betis head scout Alfredo Maravic said the camp is about more than just playing football. He said they want players to develop their understanding of the game, improve their individual abilities and learn how to contribute effectively as part of a team.

“Our methodology places emphasis on progressive learning, effort, discipline, respect and teamwork. We want every player to leave the camp having learned something valuable, both as a footballer and as a person,” Maravic said.

The organisers have also recognised that participants will arrive with different levels of experience and ability, making age-appropriate training an important part of the programme, with Lopez noting that a 10-year-old player would have different developmental needs from a 19-year-old. “Our approach is therefore to adapt the training programme to the age group and stage of development of each participant,” he explained.

Maravic said international football programmes allowed players to experience different coaching approaches and broaden their understanding of the game.

He highlighted Real Betis Inside as one of the club’s international programmes, offering footballers the opportunity to travel to Seville, train at the club’s facilities and experience its environment. However, Maravic emphasised that any specific player-selection opportunities or progression pathways linked to the camp would need to be confirmed by the club.

Lopez said the academy operates internationally through several programmes, including permanent academies, coach development initiatives and partnerships with clubs, adding that South Africa had significant potential to continue building those connections.

Both Lopez and Maravic encouraged interested players and their families to register and become part of an experience built around learning, teamwork, discipline, and a shared passion for football.
