Sepanya will represent South African Disabled Darts Association in Belgium

JOBURG – “I won the first place medal for doubles and a trophy for the Most Improved Player of the Tournament. I also won a trophy for second place in the singles.”

Sgt Oscar Sepanya of Jeppe SAPS has been selected to represent the South African Disabled Darts Association at the Inaugural World Darts Championships in Belgium in February next year.

Sepenya told the EXPRESS he is humbled to be selected to take part in the event.

He joined the Gauteng disabled darts squad last year.

“At first, I just wanted to keep myself fit. Little did I know that darts will become one of my favourite hobbies.

“I used to participate in athletics and soccer but all that ended after being involved in a car incident in 2009. The incident left me wheelchair bound. It did not just cost me my legs, I was unable to do the things that I used to do.

“After the incident, I didn’t have a job for six months. During these months, I was in rehabilitation in hospital. It was there that the physiotherapist recommended that I do some exercises.

“Losing my legs was very painful for me but I learned to accept it. I would like to advise everyone who is wheelchair bound to go out and do something for themselves rather than to rely on someone to do everything for them,” he said.

Sepanya has won numerous awards. Last year September he played national corporates.

“I won the first place medal for doubles and a trophy for the Most Improved Player of the Tournament. I also won a trophy for second place in the singles. This year I placed second in the doubles,” he said.

His plea to members of the community and good Samaritans is to sponsor him to represent SA and SAPS in Belgium.

“The trip, including flights, accommodation and food, will cost R28 500,” he said.
