Kensington swimmers splash out and bring home the bling
“It was my first major gala, and I was excited, but also nervous."
Three Kensington swimmers brought home a total of 20 medals after competing in the Aquatics Gauteng Level 1 Championships held on March 8 in Pretoria.
Adam Maule (13), Mogale Kgaswe (14) and Sean Cockcroft (16) are trained by Kensington’s Roaring Tigers coach, Tertia Biffi collectively swam in 21 races and took a total of 20 medals.
The three boys are also members of the ESP Piranhas Swimming Club, Edenvale and have been training and participating in various galas since May 2019, in order to qualify for this event.
“It was my first major gala, and I was excited, but also nervous. Although I knew I’d set good times, I didn’t expect to get nine medals from the 11 races that I swam in,” said Adam who has only been swimming at this level for a year.
Adam won three gold, four silver and two bronze medals and racked up 150 points for the club.
Mogale returned home with 128 points and three gold and two silver medals as well as one bronze.
“This was my first Level 1 regional gala and it was so much fun. It was so awesome to see the Roaring Tigers Squad winning so many medals as part of ESP – we totally cleaned them out,” said Sean who participated in eight races and won one gold and four bronze medals.
The ESP Piranhas were also the top performing club out of 30 on the day finishing on 116.92 points.
