Rave reviews on The Color Purple from American composers

American composers Brenda Russell, Allee Willis and Stephen Bray were mesmerised by the performance of the South African produced musical, The Color Purple staged at the Nelson Mandela Theatre at Joburg Theatre.

Their excitement and appreciation for the production was apparent from their reviews after they watched the show on February 16.

Russell described the musical as “mind-blowing” and said she appreciated the talented singers and great dancing that were part of the show.
She also stated that it was incredible to watch the musical in South Africa as a significant part of the story is based in Africa.
Bray, who debuted in the Broadway scene with his production of The Color Purple was also in awe.
“We have heard of South Africa’s vocal style before, so to have it applied to our musical was a dream come true,” he said.

The City of Johannesburg’s MMC for community development, Clr Nonhlanhla Sifumba, expressed pride in the Joburg City Theatre’s leadership, management and staff for creating an environment for the production to be created and showcased at the Nelson Mandela Theatre.
