Keep the kids active with this homemade bubble jar

There are so many developmental benefits of playing with bubbles. Best of all, they're easy to make at home and cost-effective.

Are you looking for something to keep the kids out of your hair this coming weekend? This fun bubble jar is simple to make and will give your child hours of fun. It’s also cheap to make and will repurpose some of your old bottles, too. What better way to be kind to the earth and keep the little ones engaged could there be?

Why do children love bubbles?

When babies are able to focus and see clearly, (around two to three months old), they may start enjoying watching a parent blow bubbles. It stimulates their brains and gets their eyes working. Basically, bubbles float and it keeps them engaged and interested. When babies and toddlers reach for bubbles to try and pop them, that’s great practice for their fine motor skills. For older children, walking and chasing bubbles helps them learn to stop, start, change directions, and shift their weight. Playing with bubbles is also a great way to keep pre-schoolers entertained, while primary school-aged children will also enjoy making their own homemade bubbles.

What you’ll need:

  • A large, clean plastic bottle, preferably wide-mouthed
  • 2 tablespoons of glycerin
  • 4 cups of hot water
  • 1 cup of liquid dish soap
  • A bubble wand

What to do:

All you need to do is combine everything together. This is a great way to get the kids interested in a project with you, too. Just be sure to handle the hot water yourself in case of accidents. Screw the bottle’s lid on tightly, and shake it up! Your bubbles will be ready to go.
