Student funding campaign launched

UKZN students showed they care about their fellow students, with the launch of the I CARE UKZN campaign.

THE University of KwaZulu-Natal (UKZN) launched the ‘I CARE UKZN’ campaign last week, which was attended by student leaders, members of the executive management and potential donors.

The I CARE UKZN campaign is an initiative for students by students, and aims to raise funds that will assist academically excelling students who are unfunded and are unable to continue with their respective studies. With the support of University Management, the UKZN Student Leadership (SRC), inspired by initiatives at other institutions and cognisant of the growing need for funding, are spearheading this programme. Appeals were made to staff, students, communities, business, individuals and all stakeholders to support this worthy cause.

Senzo Ngidi, President of the Central SRC handed a cheque for R12 000 that was raised this week to Mr Michael Davids, Head of Student Funding at UKZN, who will administer the funds. Ngidi said that student leaders wanted to create a culture of giving, not only among students at the university but also in the communities where they live. He encouraged students to volunteer their services and spread the word, as well as raise funds from church groups, spaza shops, local businesses, corporates and community members.

UKZN Vice Chancellor, Dr Albert van Jaarsveld, encouraged the university community to support this notable cause.

“The I CARE campaign provided potential donors with the opportunity to make a tangible difference in the lives of young students. The thirst for knowledge knows no limit and with your generous support you can enable our students to achieve their academic dreams,” he said at the launch.

The university currently awards bursaries and scholarships to the approximate value of R740 million and administers about R880 million in student funding. This is derived from various internal and external sources including NSFAS, bursaries, scholarships, government and the private sector.

Donations can be made via the UKZN Foundation, Standard Bank and snapscan. For further details visit www.ukzn.ac.za and click on “I CARE UKZN”.
