‘She had just celebrated her birthday’: Jaydin remembered by colleagues after Reiger Park killing
She will be remembered as the colleague who brought her own energy into the workplace, and the young woman whose smile and laughter became part of the daily rhythm of the company.
Just two days after celebrating her birthday, Jaydin Magerman arrived at work on Friday morning, August 7, like she had done every other day during her six months at PL Steel Services in Jet Park, Boksburg.
She went about her normal duties as a receptionist, interacting with colleagues, customers and visitors, unaware that it would be the last time they would see her walk through the company’s doors.
There was nothing unusual about her final day at work.
By all accounts, it was an ordinary working day – the kind of day that, at the time, did not indicate that it would become a memory her colleagues would carry for the rest of their lives.
Hours later, the 27-year-old was among four people killed in the deadly shooting in Reiger Park that has left the community shocked and grieving.
For those at PL Steel, however, Jaydin was much more than one of the victims of a horrific crime. She was a colleague who had become part of the everyday life of the workplace.
Although she had been with the company for only six months, PL Steel’s human resources representative, Farren Elof, said Magerman had made a lasting impression on those around her.
“She was more than just a colleague; she was someone who became part of our everyday lives at work,” said Elof.
“She brought her own personality, energy and presence into the workplace and it is difficult to accept that we will no longer see her walk through those doors.”
Her role as a receptionist meant she was often among the first people customers, suppliers and visitors encountered when they arrived at the company.
According to the company, the impact of her death has been felt beyond her immediate circle of colleagues, with messages of condolences coming from people whose paths had crossed with hers.
The company said this was a reflection of the impression she had made during her relatively short time there.

A normal Friday that became her last
Magerman’s colleagues will remember her final day at work differently now.
She had arrived at work, interacted with people and carried out her responsibilities as usual.
No one knew that it would be the last time they would see her.
“It is heartbreaking to think that Friday would be the last time her colleagues would see her at work and that it would be the last time we all saw her beautiful smile and heard her lovely laugh,” said Elof.
For those who worked alongside her, ordinary moments from that Friday have taken on a significance they could never have imagined at the time.
And perhaps most painfully, Magerman had only celebrated her birthday two days earlier.
Remembering Jaydin beyond the tragedy
PL Steel said the circumstances surrounding Magerman’s death have made the loss even harder to accept.
The company extended its condolences not only to Magerman’s family, but also to the family of fellow victim Roleen Lessing and the families of the two police officers killed in the same incident.
Elof said Magerman’s death had also served as another painful reminder of the impact of gun violence on communities.
But for those who knew Magerman at work, her memory will extend beyond the circumstances of her death.
She will be remembered as the receptionist who welcomed people into PL Steel, the colleague who brought her own energy into the workplace, and the young woman whose smile and laughter became part of the daily rhythm of the company.
“Jaydin will be deeply missed by everyone at PL Steel and our thoughts and prayers remain with her family and loved ones during this incredibly difficult time,” said Elof.
She is survived by her mother Colette and father Dean, and her three siblings, Keziah, Lesane’ and Liam.
