Following an enquiry with the municipality on the issue, Ekurhuleni metro spokesperson, Sam Modiba, says that residents are encouraged to make use of prepayment metering.
“This service is a more modern method of dealing with the measurement and payment of electricity.
“We have more than 1 500 electricity prepayment vendors throughout the metro and surrounds, ensuring that the purchase of units will become an easy and routine exercise,” says Modiba.
He says customers can make use of the subsidised cost of R660 to convert to a prepayment electricity meter.
“This will include all costs related to the installation of a prepayment meter, allowing the user to monitor and control electricity consumption daily, by means of the in-house display.
“There is no difference in the rates paid by prepayment customers, and it certainly is not more expensive than the rates payable on conventional meters,” he says.
