Ramoloko commends the airport security, adding that “the security is so tight that one would not be able to go through (the gates) without being found out.”
The South Gauteng division of the National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) says there has been a 56 per cent increase in drug-related crimes recorded at the airport in 2011/12.
It says there is an urgent need for Spanish translators in the Kempton Park area, on the East Rand, to cope with the increase in drug-related court cases involving South Americans.
It is alleged that most of the drug peddlers come from Sao Paolo, Brazil, but the kingpins are yet to be unmasked.
The NPA’s Raymond Mathenjwa says that though drug peddlers have been arrested, securing the conviction of syndicate kingpins isn’t easy.
Ramaloko believes that a recent drug bust where an unclaimed luggage bag carrying 20kg of crystal meth worth R5-m was seized, will lead to the closing down of a drug syndicate activity.
