Prisoners are going to the polls
Thousands of prison inmates in the country are expected to take part in the upcoming national elections.
Officials at the Boksburg prison are urging family members to bring ID’s for their relatives, who are behind bars.
This comes after prisoners were recently given the right to vote.
IEC spokesperson Kate Bapela confirmed that prisoners are allowed to exercise their right to vote in 2014, but those awaiting trial will be excluded.
Voter education campaigns will be held on February 4 and 5, then on February 5 to 7, and prisoners will be given a chance to register to vote in the 2014 elections.
According to the Boksburg prison spokesperson, Patrick Thobejane, political party agents will not be allowed to campaign in the premises, however, brochures and pamphlet will be allowed.
The Boksburg prison houses more or less 4 500 prisoners.
