A Sunward Park resident can now breathe a sigh of relief as the Ekurhuleni metro allegedly repaired the manhole on the corner of Tosca and Bellini streets on Monday.
The concerned resident, who wished to remain anonymous, previously told the Advertiser the manhole had been open since the beginning of the year and was reported to the metro, to no avail.
She said her biggest concern was the safety of the community as the open manhole posed a danger to children, pedestrians and cyclists.
“I was so shocked to see the manhole is actually closed when I drove past – I nearly had an accident!. It really is a relief that the manhole is fixed. I was always anxious when I saw children and grandparents walking in the vicinity of the manhole.
“I don’t know who repaired it, but I assume it was the municipality. I believe our ward councillor, Bruce Reid, also escalated the matter. A small piece of the new cover of the manhole, that is made out of cement, is broken, but that is the least of my concerns. I’m just happy that it’s fixed,” the resident said.
The Advertiser is still awaiting comment from the metro.
