Van Dyk Park principal aims to take school to greater heights

The principal used to play rugby for Hoërskool Dr EG Jansen during his school days.

The newly appointed principal of Van Dyk Primary School, Frans Spang, is determined to invest in the technological aspect of the school, intending to produce quality learners.

Spang, who has been working at the school for 17 years as a social sciences teacher, rose to a new challenge by taking up the reins from the previous principal, Corrie Nortman, in July last year.

He upgraded the internet system for the school’s E-learning to run smoothly.

“The technology that we have invested in the school enables our teachers to work much easier and provide quality educations to produce quality learners. We have installed cameras in and around the school for the security of our learners. In every classroom, there are cameras to monitor teaching and learning from my office.”

Spang, who lives in Elspark, grew up in Van Dyk Park. He matriculated from Hoërskool Dr EG Jansen for which he played rugby. He then proceeded to the University of Johannesburg, where he studied education.

“I started my practicals at the school in 2005, so taking up this position was a natural progression. I enjoy working with children, and the joy that comes with seeing them develop into successful men and women makes me happy. Since I began my role as principal, I have received enormous support from the teachers.

The 38-year-old, who leads a school with 2 192 learners from Vosloorus, Boksburg, Dawn Park, Villa Liza and other areas, said when he started his teaching career at Van Dyk Park Primary, there were about 500 learners.

“The school had only Afrikaans and English learners, but as time went by it was only English learners. More classes were built throughout the years. The school has been in demand due to its excellent reputation,” Spang said.
