Tragic end to kidnapping of prominent Boksburg business owner

Faki was kidnapped shorty after arriving at Dawood Megastore on May 11.

The body of Shanshudeen Faki (68), co-owner of Dawood Megastore in Dunswart, was found in Leachville, Brakpan, on May 13.

This follows his kidnapping from the parking area of the business on May 11.

Speaking to the Benoni City Times on May 14, an eye witness, who wished to remain anonymous, said Faki, who is a resident of Lakefield, arrived at the business on the corner of Main Reef Road and Commissioner Street at 07:55.

“He entered the parking area as usual and made his way to his covered parking spot,” the witness said.

“A white Volkswagen Amarok with tinted windows drove in shortly after him. The car guard stopped the vehicle and directed the driver to another parking spot but he proceeded to the shaded area.”

The witness said the car guard then ran to him shouting that mkhulu, as Faki was fondly known, was being attacked.

“I ran towards the Amarok and saw the men holding mkhulu’s hands behind his back, dragging him into the back of the car. He was kicking and trying to get loose.

“I shouted at the men to let mkhulu go. That’s when one of them, who was wearing a balaclava, fired a shot into the air. The parking area was already quite busy. As the shot rang out everyone ran into the shop.”

The usually bustling Dawood Megastore, Dunswart, was closed on May 14. This follows the kidnapping and murder of co-owner Shanshudeen Faki.

According to this witness, the Amarok sped off over the Dunswart bridge in the direction of Van Dyk Road.

“The door was still open and I could see mkhulu in the backseat. The suspects were four African men, all wearing black. What happened was unthinkable. They knew exactly what they were doing and executed their attack with precision.”

Information circulated by Brakpan CPF Sector 4 chairperson Jessy Naicker stated that Faki’s body was discovered in a veld near Dalpark Secondary School, in Rangeview Road, on May 13.

According to Naicker, the body was wrapped in white material.

The Brakpan Herald reported on May 14 that a ransom demand of $3m
(R55m) was allegedly made on May 12.

Employees of a neighbouring business described Faki as a kind man, who offered a helping hand to everyone.

Investigations into the matter are underway by the Gauteng Provincial SAPS.

The City Times requested comment from the police. None was received at the time of publication.

Faki was laid to rest at Rynsoord Cemetery, in Benoni, on May 14.
