Back to School programme inspires learners

Learners were warmly welcomed by Executive Mayor Nkosindiphile Xhakaza, MMC for Roads and Transport Planning Cllr Andile Mngwevu and Gauteng MEC for Environment Shyla Peters.

The start of the 2025 academic year at the two high schools in Reiger Park was marked with a visit by dignitaries from local and provincial government on January 15.

The event at Oos Rand Commerce and Entrepreneurship School of Specialisation and Reiger Park High School was described as a memorable occasion filled with excitement and a strong sense of purpose.

Learners were warmly welcomed by Mayor Nkosindiphile Xhakaza, MMC for Roads and Transport Planning Andile Mngwevu and Gauteng Environment Department MEC Shyla Peters, as well as representatives of various organisations.

The mayor commended the significant investment made in the school of specialisation, highlighting its alignment with the Aerotropolis concept — a vision aimed at promoting hospitality and tourism in the region.

Learners were encouraged to dream big, with Xhakaza outlining the city’s bursary programme as a crucial resource for further studies.

Dedication
He also explained how the Aerotropolis concept connects to the school’s focus on hospitality and tourism, inspiring learners to see practical applications of their education in the real world.

Shyla Peters echoed these sentiments, urging learners to remain focused and dedicated to their work.

“You are all capable of being the best-performing learners. It requires focus and dedication,” she said.

A highlight of the day was the symbolic planting of trees at the school by the dignitaries. This was to encourage environmental responsibility, leaving behind a tangible reminder of the day’s motivational messages.

Adding to the excitement, the Gauteng Department of Sport, Arts, Culture, and Recreation donated soccer kits to the school, fostering enthusiasm and school spirit among the learners.
