Riaan Oelofse (11) from Boksburg is quickly making a name for himself in the gymnastics world, having been selected to compete at the Gauteng Provincial Tumbling Championships on August 30.
According to his mother, Kate Oelofse, Riaan has been training at the Wild Flames Club in Boksburg for about a year. His talent was noticed early by coach Chris Botha, who personally invited him to join the club.
“From the moment he started, Riaan has been amazing and has consistently performed exceptionally well. We are so proud of him.
“Specialising in acro and tumbling, Riaan quickly rose through the ranks. In December, he represented South Africa in Cape Town and won a bronze medal. Since then, he has competed in seven competitions this year alone, winning gold in all events for both acro and tumbling.”

Kate said following Riaan’s successes in Ekurhuleni competitions, he was awarded district colours and is set to represent his district at the provincial championships.
“His participation at the national level will be confirmed once he qualifies through the district, which will take place in October. We believe he will qualify.
“In just one year Riaan has been doing great. He absolutely loves gymnastics and continues to excel at every competition,” Kate added.
Despite his achievements, Riaan’s family faces financial difficulties. Kate is currently unemployed but remains determined to help her son achieve his dreams.
“We’ve done our best to fund his competitions, including the trip to Cape Town, but we are struggling. Gymnastics could take him far, and as his mother, I will do whatever I can to support him,” she explained.

The family has organised fundraising efforts, including donation drives, car washes, and appeals to local businesses. While they have raised funds for two competitions recently, more support is needed for upcoming events, district clothing, and the national championships.
Kate is appealing to the community and potential sponsors to help Riaan continue his gymnastics journey.
“If there is anyone, or any company, willing to sponsor a young athlete with so much potential, it would mean the world to us. This is our last hope,” she said.
