Choosing the right university starts with asking the right questions

Prospective students should look at the reputation of departments.

With applications for the 2027 academic year underway, prospective students are being encouraged to look beyond a university’s name and reputation when deciding where to study.

According to Dr Oliver Seale, executive Dean at Rosebank International, choosing a university is one of the most important decisions a young person will make and should involve careful research and consideration.

“Asking the right questions can help students and parents make informed decisions and ensure they choose an institution that aligns with their academic goals, personal development and future career aspirations,” said Seale.

One of the key factors students should consider is whether a university offers strong programmes in their chosen field of study.

Seale said prospective students should look at the reputation of the departments, the expertise of the lecturers, and whether the curriculum is regularly updated to meet current industry demands.

He added that graduation and retention rates are also important indicators of student success.

High completion rates often reflect strong academic support systems and suggest that students are more likely to complete their studies on time.

Career preparation should also play a significant role in the decision-making process.

Students are encouraged to investigate whether institutions offer career guidance, internship opportunities, mentorship programmes, and support services to help them transition into the workplace after graduation.

Seale further highlighted the importance of campus environment and student well-being.

“A great campus environment supports not only academic success but also personal growth, social connections and overall well-being,” he said.

He encouraged students to visit prospective institutions where possible and consider whether they feel comfortable within the campus culture and community.

While many students focus on prestige when choosing where to study, Seale said the best choice is often the institution that aligns more closely with an individual’s goals, values and learning needs.

“When students take the time to research their options and make informed decisions, they are more likely to enjoy a successful and rewarding university experience,” he said.
