Shanela tightens the net in Boksburg North

During the operation, residents voiced concerns over rising crime linked to poor streetlight maintenance, illegal power connections, noise pollution, and lack of visible crime prevention efforts.

A number of suspects have been arrested during the recent Operation Shanela in the Boksburg North policing precinct.

The coordinated law enforcement operation ran from the afternoon of June 25 to the morning of June 26.

Led by Brigadier Lindani Ndlovu, on behalf of the deputy district commissioner Brigadier Lebohang Machakela, the operation involved members of the Ekurhuleni SAPS, EMPD, Gauteng Traffic Police, Gauteng Traffic Wardens, CPF, Home Affairs, and other law enforcement agencies in Ekurhuleni.

Successes
According to SAPS Ekurhuleni district communication officer Captain Nelda Sekgobela, district detectives arrested 201 suspects in Ekurhuleni wanted for various crimes during tracing operations on June 25. Crime intelligence officers arrested six more in Boksburg North for drug possession and dealing.

Illicit cigarettes and narcotics were seized during the operation.

On June 26, the law enforcement officers arrested 37 undocumented foreign nationals in Boksburg North. Police also nabbed three suspects for drug possession, five for illicit cigarettes, and discontinued two unroadworthy vehicles.

Furthermore, they shut down one illegal shebeen and issued 23 traffic fines, valued over at R10 000.

The team also handed out three J534 tickets to second-hand goods dealers for non-compliance.

In line with the operation, the police held an imbizo in Berdopark Sector 3, where the community raised concerns about crime prevention visibility, noise pollution, illegal

electricity connections, and faulty streetlights contributing to criminal activity.

Machakela commended the success of the operation and reaffirmed SAPS’s ongoing commitment to safer communities across Ekurhuleni.
