Community members came together to take part in the City Improvement Project’s (CIP) CBD clean-up on October 29.

The CIP, chaired by Leroy Slava, has taken a stand in Boksburg and is promoting NIMBY (Not in My Back Yard).

They are working on cleanliness and security in the CBD, looking to assist and motivate council officials in cleaning Boksburg and Boksburg North and to apply the by-laws to offenders.

According to one of the organisers, Derek Fox, there was excellent turnout of 120 people who participated.
They covered the three major roads – Leeuwpoort, Commissioner and Market streets from New Beginnings to the SPAR – where hundreds of black bags with litter were filled.

“We targeted critical areas that needed urgent attention. Some areas are a major health risk, inviting rats and other vermin, not to mention the stench,” he said.

Fox added the many drains without covers are overflowing with rubbish, blocked by mud and weeds.

“Should we get any serious rain, it will cause major flooding in the CBD. We need more dustbins, but moreover we need management of those bins.”

He believes they managed to make an impact.

“The public saw us cleaning and were asking who we are and why we doing this. There is nothing more powerful than a community working toward a common goal. We are signing up people daily to our group, but we need so many more to join.”

Ward 32 Clr Marius de Vos expressed his gratitude to those who rolled up their sleeves to clean the CBD.

“Your willingness to give so freely of your time and service is greatly appreciated. Your support as businesses made it easy to clean the Boksburg CBD streets, providing us with refuse bags and other necessities contributed to the success of the campaign.”

De Vos appealed to businesses and informal traders to keep the environment clean and participate in the next clean-up, scheduled for end of November.
