Danone partners with Boksburg dairy farm to uplift community
Danone wants dairy farms to improve their ways of producing dairy products.
Danone celebrated its 50th anniversary by signing an agreement with Ncora Dairy on October 25 to uplift and empower the community of Boksburg.
The dairy, situated in Boksburg, will make R75m per annum out of the partnership.
This includes producing 2 400 jerseys, crossbreed cows and milk amounting to 10.5 million litres. At least 1 200 community members living in the vicinity of the farm will be employed and others will get business opportunities, explained the operations director at Danone Southern Africa Kid Nkantsu.
“Business success should always go hand in hand with improving the livelihoods of our communities. The agriculture sector is facing major challenges such as economic development, climate change, water scarcity and biodiversity loss, but Danone aims to help.
“It is critical for Danone to create models that support sustainable farming and drive solid investment.
“We are determined to help other farmers to overcome their crises and develop new agricultural models that can regenerate the planet while feeding a population that is set to surpass 66 million by 2030,” said Nkantsu.
He explained the agreement forms a significant part of this commitment as it aims to develop and promote regenerative models of commercial agriculture.
“Ncora is the first black-owned farm that will supply Danone with milk and it has so much potential of growing with the Boksburg community that loves nature. This is what Danone stands for.
“The farm has the necessary infrastructure. We believe that we are gearing up towards a good programme of protecting soil, empowering farmers, and promoting animal welfare,” explained Nkantsu.
He added they forged this partnership with a private company to improve farming.
“That is critical for meeting the country’s objectives. I’m inspired by being part of this initiative. It ensures that farmers are given the opportunity to grow their skills and become more sustainable.
“Danone receives the very best milk for their products while placing the environment on the forefront,” said former deputy president Phumzile Mlambo-Ngcuka, executive director of UN Women from 2013 to 2021 and a shareholder of Ncora Dairy.
