Gas tanker tragedy: Mass memorial service held in civic centre

The atmosphere was sombre and bereaved family members cried during the memorial service.

“I have visited so many of the families and affected loved ones, The pain is visible in their eyes.”

These are the words of the Executive Mayor of Ekurhuleni Tania Campbell, who addressed a mass memorial service on December 30 for the victims of the gas tanker explosion on Christmas Eve (December 24).

Hundreds of mourners, including bereaved family members, attended the service.

The death toll has risen to 34 and at the service candles were lined up in front for all the victims.

“Words cannot express the magnitude of this catastrophe.

“A catastrophe that should have never taken place,” Campbell said.

“At this time of year families are gathered to celebrate and rejoice and give thanks. For so many, they have been robbed of this pleasure.

“We have lost members of our community, who add much value.

“We have lost critical healthcare professionals – those who play such a vital role in preserving the sanctity of life.

“Today, the world is a sadder, emptier place for them not being in it,” she said.

Tambo Memorial Hospital CEO Zenzo Ndabula said he is wounded and bereaved.

“We heard the screams. We heard and saw the explosions,” he said.

He added services have been restored at the hospital following the blast.

These services include the outpatient’s department, and the antenatal clinic.

Health Minister Joe Phaahla says while he acknowledged that he had to prepare for the worst, the rising death toll is still a shock.

“On Sunday, when we were at the hospital with the MEC, I did say that an event of this nature can be far-reaching in terms of its consequences, especially knowing that burns through direct heat or fire go very deep into the body.

“But, even as one acknowledged that we must be ready for these difficulties, I did not acknowledge that the tragedy and the loss of life would be as extensive as we are seeing today.”
