Family battles to recover from killing

The family of Klaas du Toit is still trying to pick up the pieces.

“My brother’s death left a void, and it doesn’t get easier with time.”

These are the words of Roelf du Toit (38), the twin brother of Klaas, who was allegedly shot and killed by his neighbour on August 18 last year.

Roelf spoke to the Boksburg Advertiser outside the Boksburg Magistrate’s Court on January 30, where 74-year-old Evan Swan appeared on a murder charge.

Swanson stands accused of shooting Klaas twice in the upper body on August 18, which he previously told the court was in self-defence.

The court granted Swanson R5 000 bail on September 4 last year, with the condition he resides with his daughter in Edenvale until the court finalises the matter. He must also report to the Edenvale Police Station every Friday.

In an appearance on October 23 last year, Swanson indicated he wanted the bail conditions amended.

The court postponed the matter to February 21.

The state wants to add another condition to his current bail conditions, while the defence wants a bail condition lifted.

Roelf said he and his brother were very close.

“I have nightmares every day now and am struggling to sleep,” said an emotional Roelf.

Roelf described Klaas, a boiler maker, as a loving person who cared about others.

“If someone needed something like a blanket, he would give it to the person,” he added.

Furthermore, Roelf said he is in the process of adopting his brother’s daughter.

“She is doing extremely well and can stay in the same school. However, she misses her father,” he explained.

Meanwhile, Klaas’ mother, Magda Potgieter, said the longing for her child is eating her up, and she is concerned about the progress of the case.

The Boksburg Advertiser has requested comment from the National Prosecuting Authority about Potgieter’s concern.
