St Francis commemorates World Day of the Sick

The St Francis Care Centre is an NPO catering for dozens of vulnerable children and adults, most of them suffering from threatening and/or life-limiting conditions.

The St Francis Care Centre acknowledged challenges faced by the sick and expressed its commitment to providing them with support, love and care as they commemorated World Day of the Sick on February 9.

Centre manager Tilly Brouwer explained it’s an annual Catholic observance on February 11.

“The day was established to encourage Catholics to pray for those who are sick and suffering to give hope to them. The World Day of the Sick was created in 1992 by Pope John Paul II,” Brouwer explained.
This year’s theme is ‘It is not good that man should be alone – Healing the Sick by Healing Relationships’.

Primary objectives of World Day of the Sick include:
• The day emphasises the importance of showing compassion and empathy towards individuals who are sick, recognising their dignity and providing them with the care and support they need.
• World Day of the Sick acknowledges the valuable contributions of healthcare professionals, caregivers and volunteers who work tirelessly to alleviate suffering and provide comfort to patients.
• It provides an opportunity to raise awareness about healthcare challenges, disparities in access to care, and the need for improved healthcare services globally.
• For many, this day is an occasion for prayer, reflection, and spiritual renewal. It invites people to contemplate the meaning of suffering and illness in the context of their faith.

Father Jeff Jawaheer officiated a mass and blessed the patients and staff members.

The event was well attended by St Francis’ patients, staff members and other stakeholders.
